Collins is about a
child who made a piece of lanyard for his mother. His mother has done
everything for his, bathed him, care for him throughout the poem the main
character compares his mom to him. For example, he talks about how his mother has
done so much for him throughout his life, that he needs to pay her back. And he
makes a lanyard. It’s as if every stanza is a puzzle piece and at the end it
all comes together.
The first stanza
is about how the main character is older and he remember his story of how he
gave a piece of lanyard to his mother who cared for him. The second stanza is
about making his lanyard at camp and when he saw his mother he gave it to her.
I think this is very relatable because as a daughter, I realize how much my
mother does for me, I give little things to her that I make. The rest of the
stanzas are about the relationship between him and his mother. The main ideas
of these stanzas were that even the smallest thing you could give to your
mother can mean the world to her.
In the poem, there
are many words that create a good word choices the author, Billy Collins used
to set the joyful tone. For example, the word “ricocheting” which means bouncing
off wall to wall, makes a huge impact in the sentence, “The other as I was
ricocheting slowly off the pale blue walls…” the word makes it have a tone to
the sentence.
I Feel Spring
By Maya MacDougall
I hear the birds
chirping tunes,
The rain dropping
wet water on the concrete,
The kids laughing,
The sun shining
I see the children coming out of
school with joyful faces,
I see the dogs playing with a tennis
ball in the park
I feel the rain
drops on my face instead of snow freezing my face
I feel the flowers
and dirt touch my toes softly
I feel the
laughter as I close my eyes
Happiness is in
the air
Spring has come.
Haiku’s
“In the sea
, purple, gold, and pink reflect
on
the shiny sand”
“Waves come up to the purple shore bubbles,
left on the sand, the clouds are colors like
a rainbow
water on their gentle toes”
“Splashing all around,
salt water on the ground
their faces smiling at one another”
“Dream
or reality?
Tropics, trees, and sunsets
Enjoying the view of the crane flying in the
distance”

Waves
Pure blue waves
Pouring out of the
calm
Deep blue ocean
Boats full of
people
Scared, more like
terrified in the
Deep blue ocean
The talls waves
more like hands
Towering over the
people
Like a huge
skyscraper in the
Deep blue ocean
Water spilling,
Water sprouting,
Water as big as a
building,
In the deep blue
ocean
Sonnet:
Ocean Sonnet
By Maya MacDougall
The wind is blowing in the summer air
I jump off the dock, splashing all
around,
I went to the house, surrounded by
flowers
You skip, frolicking, surrounded by
sound
Ocean washes something up on the sand
Today, the sea formed haystacks of
seaweed
Yesterday formed sea -shells and
crunchy sand,
Gentle hum of the soft ocean breeze
In joyful moments lazing by a
steam,
foaming seas and to the land
of the dream.
Remember me, but only with a
smile,
A sign of the ocean and it’s
breeze
The magenta flowers are blossoming
The blue-red coral and it’s mystery.
